Our Community: Krus na Ligas Elementary School
The barangay is an urban community near UP, originating from early settlements from the Spanish times. Its name came from a ligas tree in the area, which formed a cross and was said to have medicinal properties; later prompting the institution of a chapel that now remains as a symbol of the inhabitant’s rightful ownership of the land. The land is currently under dispute with the UP Diliman Campus (Llaneta, C.), the latter occupying the settlement in former President Quezon’s time.
Before the war, the school began to form when a Grade 1 class of 26 students opened in around 1940-1941, under Natalio Fulgencio’s house and Mrs. Salud Maraol, their teacher. Another class (Grade 2) was formed the following year. This came to a grinding halt during the war and liberation period, wherein KNL children were sent to Balara Elementary School (BES) from 1945-1951.
A multigrade (Grades 1-3) class was reopened in the Krus na Ligas chapel and headed by one teacher on June 1951. In 1954, a complete primary grade was offered to the school, wherein a combination class from Gr. 1 to 4 was headed by two teachers, using the chapel and a resident’s house. A two-unit pre-fabricated school building was constructed in October 1961 under the supervision of then BES principal Mrs. Caridad Dumlao, material donation by the Philippine Army, and construction was done through the joint efforts of concerned parents of the community & the Barrio Council. This new school had three teachers and served as an annex of BES. Another 6-classroom building was constructed for the school year 1962-63, increasing enrollment and adding four teachers to the school, with Mr. Fresco B. Licud named as the Head Teacher.
From 1963 to 1964, The school split from Balara Elementary School and became a different complete elementary school, with the teaching force increasing from seven to eleven members. Over the years, the elementary school kept on growing, instituting new developments in technology facilities and overseeing numerous increases in employment & enrollment.
Krus na Ligas Elementary School (KNLES) is a public school situated in Brgy. Krus na Ligas, a community inside the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines (UPD).
From Pisay, KNLES can be accessed by tricycles and private cars. However, public four-wheeled vehicles like jeepneys and UVs cannot easily pass through the narrow and crowded streets of barangay Krus na Ligas. To leave barangay Krus na Ligas, the researchers would ride a tricycle from a station outside KNLES.
