At Rocky, our programming focuses on improving self and community. Programming opportunities are broken down into the following areas:
Service:
GT Mentoring at local middle schools: Junior and senior GT students mentor middle school GT students
GT tutoring class: Sophomore, junior and senior students work weekly with students at local elementary schools. Students normally tutor in math or language arts. Tutors earn RMHS credit based on their number of contact hours and attendance at monthly seminars.
Wellness:
Wellness Workshops: In conjunction with the Wellness Center, Rocky offers Wellness lunch workshops that help students learn about topics such as stress management, test anxiety, perfectionism and organization. There are 2 types of sessions available: the 9th grade wellness series (fall semester) and wellness sessions open to all grades (all year at lunch).
Academics and Special Interests
Research Day: Each year, RMHS GT students sponsor and host a student research conference that showcases research papers and projects. Interested students submit an application, and selected students present their research as an oral presentation, panel presentation or poster presentation.
Book Club: This group meets one to two times per month to discuss novels selected by the group. Local novelists also are invited to speak to the group.
Creative Writing Group: Based on student interest, this group meets monthly to share pieces of their creative writing. The group also participates in workshops to help improve specific areas of creative writing.
Mentorships: Students who have a specific area of interest may apply for a mentorship through the district. Class credit is available, and often, students are given the opportunity to work on real world projects in their chosen field.
College Planning Group: Led by Rocky’s College/ Career Counselor, this group helps G/T students research career paths and navigate the college application process. The group is open to all G/T sophomore and juniors.
Field Trips/ Guest Speakers: These trips occur when museums such as the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Art Museum, etc. offer programming or exhibits that are of interest to high school students. When available, Rocky also brings in guest speakers to meet with our GT population.
