The goal of MYP Chemistry is to prepare the students for IB Diploma Level classes by teaching scientific skills that align with the Next Generation Science Standards . The chemistry content is the lens in which students practice these skills to become well-rounded scientists. Chemistry is “not a difficult course, but a different course” (Dr. Schramm, 2017) and will challenge students to synthesize abstract and concrete concepts and further develop their reading, writing, and math skills.
I give students as much practice that I believe is needed to master the skill or concept, so they should complete it EVERYDAY. I am not trying to burden students with busy work as I understand students have other classes and involvements outside of school.
That being said, everyone learns at a different pace and what takes one student 10 minutes might take another half an hour. It is up to the student to monitor their comprehension level. If after completing the assigned practice, a student still does not feel they have mastered the skill, there is always additional practice available. Please just ask!
Make sure all work from that lesson has been completed
Complete any assigned practice
Reread, highlight and summarize your notes
Make flashcards (Quizlet is a great website for that)
Watch videos on Youtube (Khan Academy, Tyler DeWitt, Melissa Maribel & CrashCourse are all good ones. Just beware they may cover more details than required in class, if confused, just ask!)
Explain the lesson to a friend, parent or younger sibling. Often when teaching you learn better!
Make corrections on past work that was incorrect and identify what mistakes were made
