In Enrichment, we played games that involved sorting foods into the 5 food groups: Fruits, Veggies, Grains, Dairy, and Protein. We learned about what each type of food does for our bodies and why they are grouped into their specific category.
Then we learned about the plate method. The goal is to fill our plates with 1/2 fruits and veggies, 1/4 quality protein, 1/4 whole grains, and a bit of dairy on the side. Students can use their fist to measure a serving size (2 fistfulls for fruits and veggies).
We also learned about red light, green light, and yellow light foods. Green light foods are always a go and come from nature. We should eat them at every meal, every day. Yellow light foods are slightly more processed so we will have them sometimes throughout the week. Red light foods are treats or special occasion foods that we eat every once in a while, but limit since they are harder for our bodies to process or benefit from.
