COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Sports Medicine –This course provides an opportunity for the study and application of the components of sports medicine, including but not limited to sports medicine-related careers, organizational and administrative considerations, and laws, prevention of athletic injuries, recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation and management skills, taping and wrapping techniques, first aid/CPR/AED, emergency procedures, nutrition, sports psychology, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and therapeutic exercises. Course understanding will be demonstrated through weekly quizzes, labs, and projects.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Instruction in this course will focus on the following teaching and learning objectives:
Basic foundation of sports trauma/injuries
Anatomy and physiology of the body as it relates to sports injuries
Prevention of sports-related injuries
Taping and wrapping for sports-related injuries
Discovery of careers within the field of Sports Medicine
ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS:
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to show evidence of learning in their:
Ability to identify the anatomy and physiology of the human body
Ability to diagnose and treat athletic injuries
Ability to wrap/tape specific injuries
Ability to assess a situation, create a course of action, and apply the necessary steps for an athletic-related injury
Ability to differentiate between careers within sports medicine
COURSE LEVEL:
This course is open to juniors and seniors who have satisfactorily completed a Level 1 PE course.
