Physical Education Course Descriptions

ADAPTIVE P.E.

Semester - Grades 9-12

This specialized course is designed for students who have special needs in both physical education and social aspects.  Individual adaptations will be made to work on fine and gross motor skills.  Students will also learn fitness and wellness concepts necessary to live a healthy life.

HEALTH

Graduation Requirement

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is designed to meet the needs of today's student in typical areas of concern.  Including topics such as : communicable diseases, substance abuse, nutrition, lifestyle and wellness, consumer health, mental health, body systems and sex education and other topics pertaining to the development and care of a healthy body. 

PREREQUISITE:  None


INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is designed to emphasize activities that promote lifetime fitness skills through participation in individual sport activities. Students will learn terminology, history, rules and skills for sports such as tennis, golf, archery, bowling, pickleball, table tennis, and badminton. 

PREREQUISITE:  None


TEAM SPORTS

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is designed for students in grades 9-12 who want to continue to develop techniques and skills in physical activities. There is emphasis on strategies, team participation, and fitness concepts. Students will be introduced to game skills, rules, and knowledge for softball, fleetball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and floor hockey.

PREREQUISITE:  None


OUTDOOR ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES (O.A.A.)

Semester - Grade 12

In this course students learn to achieve fitness through the introduction of various outdoor activities in various climatic conditions. Students have the opportunity to explore and develop interests and lifetime skills that can continue throughout life supporting a lifetime of fitness.

PERSONAL FITNESS

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is designed for students to utilize the high school fitness center and learn how to use fitness equipment to increase personal health. Students will develop their own personal fitness routine. Treadmills, bikes, rowers, steppers, aerobics and weights will all be used in cardiovascular training. Students will learn fitness and nutritional concepts to enhance their training program. Students will complete at least four 30 minute aerobic workouts per week.

POWER WALKING

Semester - Grades 9-12

This class is designed to assist the student in the improvement of cardiovascular fitness through walking. Students will gain an understanding of endurance, muscular strength and flexibility for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

PREREQUISITE:  None


SPORTS OFFICIATING

Semester-Grades 11-12

This course is an elective course that focuses on the professional philosophy, and professional requirements for officiating sports for athletic contests. This course will cover officiating football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, soccer, and baseball/softball. Upon completion of the course students will be afforded the option to take certification exams in areas that certify at this age. Students will be provided with training and practical experiences in officiating. Students must be 16 to enroll in the class

PREREQUISITE: Students must be 16 years or older


WEIGHT TRAINING AND CONDITIONING

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course will include the formation of a program composed for flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. Proper methods, theories, safety precautions, and correlating physical benefits will be stressed. Students will participate in daily workouts in the weight room.

WORLD DANCE

Semester - Grades 11-12

This course emphasizes activities to promote lifetime fitness through the participation in cultural dance. Students will learn about different dance forms and will choreograph their own dances. Students will demonstrate knowledge through dance skill demonstration, participation, and written exams of dance history, music, costumes and equipment. 

PREREQUISITE:  None 


INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS MEDICINE

Semester - Grades 11-12

This course is designed to educate students who have an interest in or participate in athletics. Students will learn about basic anatomy, injuries common to athletics, and injury prevention and care. Students will also be introduced to a variety of professions in the area of sports medicine. This elective course may not substitute for a physical education course which serves a graduation requirement.

AQUATICS 1

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course will promote cardiovascular fitness through participation in a variety of aquatic activities. Non-swimmers will be provided with a strong foundation to progress toward becoming a competent swimmer through the American Red Cross’ “Learn to Swim” program. Emphasis will be placed on buoyancy and breathing, entries and exits, and personal safety. These topics will ne presented in a variety of methods including skill and game-related activities.

PREREQUISITE: None


AQUATICS 2

Semester - Grades 10-12

This course is designed for the advanced swimmer. Students will increase their skill level in all strokes, diving, water safety, fitness and recreational games. Individual conditioning program through lap swimming based on ability will be developed.   

PREREQUISITE: Aquatics 1 or equivalent assessment given by an instructor


AQUATIC FITNESS AND LIFEGUARDING

Semester - Grades 10-12

In this course students will gain endurance through aquatic fitness activities and learn the skills necessary to become a certified lifeguard. The program developed by the American Red Cross will be taught and used for certification. This class is for the advanced swimmer. Students must be (or turn) age 15 to enroll in this class.

PREREQUISITES: 

Students should be able to or must demonstrate the ability to: 1) Swim 300 yards continuously (12 lengths of the pool) 2) Timed swim event with a 10lb brick 3) Tread water (not using arms) for 2 minutes


UNIFIED PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Semester-Grades 9-12

This course provides modified instruction for students with unique and diverse abilities in the area of physical education. Students will develop physical and fundamental motor skills, as well as skills in team and individualized games and sports. Each student will be working with general education mentors in grades 10-12. The goal is to increase competency in fitness and sports skills and increase enjoyment of physical activity in a collaborative peer supported environment.

PREREQUISITE:  SSD Recommendation


HEALTH AND WELLNESS MENTORS

Semester--Grades 11-12 (non-credit)

This course is designed for juniors and seniors interested in earning service or tutoring hours in a collaborative environment. In this course students will have the opportunity to help others by mentoring students with physical and developmental disabilities. Students will take on the role of buddies to provide leadership in a variety of physical fitness games and activities. Students will lead and participate in lead up activities and general health and wellness activities with the students they are mentoring. This is a non-credit bearing course which will provide 25 total service or tutoring hours. Students earning A+ hours must meet all A+ program requirements.

PREREQUISITE: Teacher Recommendation


DRIVER EDUCATION

Semester - Grades 10-12

This course is designed to meet the needs of young people in the community who want to complete the Missouri State Department of Education approved course.  Sixty (60) hours of classroom instruction, twelve (12) hours of simulation, fifteen (15) hours of in car observation, and three (3) hours of in class driving experience are needed to meet State requirements.

PREREQUISITE:  

Student must be 15 years old by the first day of class.

Student must meet state vision requirements: The vision standard is 20/40 acuity or better, with or without correction, with either eye or both eyes, and temporal horizontal peripheral vision in each eye of 55 degrees or better.
