Business Course Descriptions

ACCOUNTING 1

Semester - Grades 10-12

This course is designed to build a basic understanding of accounting principles, concepts, and procedures for a service business organized as a proprietorship. Activities include using the accounting equation, completing the accounting cycle, entering transactions to journals, posting to ledgers, completing banking activities, preparing end-of-period statements and reports, and performing other related tasks.

PREREQUISITE:  None


ACCOUNTING 2

Semester - Grades 10-12

This course is designed to help students acquire a more thorough, in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques utilized in solving business problems and making financial decisions for a retail merchandizing business organized as a corporation. Students will develop skills in analyzing and interpreting information common to corporations, preparing formal statements and supporting schedules. 

PREREQUISITE: Accounting 1

AP® MICROECONOMICS

Semester 1 - Grade 11-12

AP Microeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers. The course also develops students’ familiarity with the operation of product and factor markets, distributions of income, market failure, and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. AP Microeconomics is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college course in economics.

AP® MACROECONOMICS

Semester 2 - Grade 11-12

AP Macroeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination. It also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts. AP Macroeconomics is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college course in economics.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Semester- Grades 11-12

This course is designed to help students develop an understanding of skills and resources needed to manage a business. Instruction includes a general overview of business, forms of business ownership, management responsibilities, ethical and social issues of business, human resources management, labor-management relations, and government regulations.

PREREQUISITE: None


BUSINESS & PERSONAL LAW

Semester - Grades 11-12

This course is designed to acquaint students with the basic legal principles relevant to their roles as citizens, consumers, and employees through a mixture of personal, business, and consumer law. The content includes the basic characteristics of the sources of law, the court system, trial procedures, criminal law, tort law, contract law, and consumer law.

PREREQUISITE:  None 


COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is designed to help students master beginning skills in the areas of keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet applications, database management, presentation applications and integration of software using Microsoft Office Professional Suite. Windows 10 is the operating system that is used to use such programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.

COLLEGE CREDIT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Semester - Grades 11-12

This course is designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge needed for organizing, developing, and implementing a business within the private free enterprise system. Topics of study will include learning the advantages and challenges of owning a business, preparing a business plan, choosing a location, securing a loan, determining organizational structure, and promoting a business.

PREREQUISITE:  Marketing 1 or Business Management


INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

Semester - Grades 9-10

This course is designed to introduce students to how business works in today's society and to provide a foundation for other business courses. Content includes business topics such as accounting, finance, economics, management, marketing, government's role in business, and technology in the business world.

PREREQUISITE:  None


MARKETING 1

Semester - Grades 10-12 

This course emphasizes marketing principles and introduces students to the different areas of the marketing field. Topics covered include marketing concepts, market planning, product development, and promotion. Projects, presentations, and teamwork are an important part of this class. Students will have an opportunity to join DECA - An Association of Marketing Students. DECA offers students the opportunity for leadership training, community service, travel to conferences, and assess their marketing skills at the district, state, and national competitions.

PREREQUISITE:  None


MARKETING 2

Semester - Grade 12

This course is a continuation of the Marketing 1 course with an emphasis on pricing and distribution of products, inventory, sales, sales promotion, and advertising. Projects, presentations, and teamwork are an important part of this class. Students will have an opportunity to join DECA - An Association of Marketing Students. DECA offers students the opportunity for leadership training, community service, travel to conferences, and assess their marketing skills at the district, state, and national competitions.

PREREQUISITE:  Marketing 1 


PERSONAL FINANCE 

Graduation Requirement

Semester - Grades 11-12

Personal Finance applies money and economic concepts to the development of personal financial goals. Skills in money management deal with the study of basic concepts of economics, spending, credit, savings, investments, insurance, and budgeting--skills needed for productive citizenship. The course may also cover financial matters such as opportunity costs, taxes, income, employee benefits, and consumer protection.

SENIOR CAREER INTERNSHIP 1

Semester - Grade 12

This course is designed to allow students to learn all aspects of employment through classroom instruction in a paid or unpaid internship. Topics covered in class include ethics and social responsibility, interpersonal skills, health and safety on the job, and legal issues in the workplace. Students enrolled in this course have the opportunity to apply these topics to a career of their choice in a paid or unpaid internship through the Senior Career Internship Field Experience 1 course.

PREREQUISITE:  NONE


SENIOR CAREER INTERNSHIP 2

Semester - Grade 12

This course is a continuation of Senior Career Internship 1 with the focus on creating career portfolios, discussing employment taxes, social security, insurance, developing time management, leadership, teamwork skills, and researching entrepreneurship opportunities in career fields. Students enrolled in the course have the opportunity to apply these topics to a career of their choice in a paid or unpaid internship through the Senior Career Internship Field Experience 2 course.

PREREQUISITE:  Senior Career Internship 1


SENIOR CAREER INTERNSHIP FIELD EXPERIENCE

Semester or full year - Grade 12

This course is designed to assist students to become acquainted with a career field of interest and provide learning experiences in the real world environment. Students will apply the topics learned in the Senior Career Internship 1 course to their field experience. Through the cooperative effort of the school and community, students can make connections with the real world expectations in terms of accuracy of work, production, staying on task, and responsibility for work. The field experience reinforces the importance of interpersonal skills, decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills, which gives students a forum to develop positive workplace experiences as they enter the workforce or prepare to continue their education. The teacher-coordinator will assist in placing students in appropriate training environments, work closely with each employer, and is responsible for supervising the field experience. Students will receive academic credit based on employer evaluations, completed instructional management plans, journal entries, and employment reports. Students may receive .5 credit per semester based on 10-19 hours interning per week or 1 credit per semester based on 20 or more hours per week. 

PREREQUISITE:  Approved application and concurrent enrollment in Senior Career Internship 1 or 2


SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING

Semester - Grades 11–12

This course is designed to allow students to apply the basic functions of marketing to the sports and entertainment industry. Topics discussed throughout the course are college, amateur, and professional sports and the entertainment industry. Students will learn how to market products through these industries and to evaluate their public images. Legal issues of the sports and entertainment sector will also be discussed. Students will be involved in group projects, research, evaluating web sites, and possible field trips to various sports and entertainment venues.

WEB DESIGN 1

Semester - Grades 9-12

This course is an introduction to creating documents to be published on the Internet. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of web design concepts and techniques that are essential to planning, creating, testing, publishing, and maintaining websites. They will also learn how to incorporate text, still images, multimedia, lines, tables, and frames into their web pages. Media approval necessary: Internet research, student work, and student photos could be published on the Pattonville School District website.
