EL Course Descriptions

EL CONTENT  

Full Year - Grades 9–12 

A one to two-year course for students at beginning to intermediate proficiency in English to learn basic subject area vocabulary and concepts, academic language, and learning strategies necessary to access content in science, social studies, and math. Topics will vary according to student need. Students will be concurrently enrolled in Literacy for English Learners 1 or 2. 

PREREQUISITE: Placement by MO Newcomer Screener, WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS, or teacher recommendation 

LITERACY FOR EL 1

Full Year - Grades 9–12 

This yearlong course for beginning level English learners is designed to provide communication-based language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Course content will be focused on foundational English grammar and vocabulary, sentence writing, reading comprehension, and beginning level speaking and listening skills. This course can be repeated for credit.

PREREQUISITE: Placement by MO Newcomer Screener, WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS Test, or teacher recommendation 


LITERACY FOR EL 2

Full Year - Grades 9–12

This yearlong course is designed for English learners working toward an intermediate level of proficiency in English and will provide communication-based language instruction that deepens students' listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking skills in English. This course can be repeated for credit.

PREREQUISITE: Literacy for English Learners 1, or placement by WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS Test, or teacher recommendation 


LITERACY FOR EL 3

Full Year - Grades 9-12 

This yearlong course for English learners working toward an advanced level of proficiency will build upon students' listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking skills to develop more complex means of expression. This course can be repeated for credit.

Prerequisite: Literacy for English Learner 2, or placement by WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS Test, or teacher recommendation 


LITERACY FOR EL 4  

Full Year - Grades 9-12

A course for early advanced EL students to further develop skills from Literacy for English Learners 3 in listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking in an integrated form. Students will master more complex means of expression to progress toward higher language skills and improve writing and reading to support increased use of English in content area classes. Can be repeated for credit. 

PREREQUISITE: Literacy for English Learners 3, or placement by WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS Test, or teacher recommendation 


EL READING ESSENTIALS

Full Year - Grades 9-12

This course is offered for EL students reading below grade level based on formal reading assessments. The course will focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, reading comprehension and vocabulary development with special consideration given to the needs of non-native speakers. (May be repeated for credit based on EL teacher recommendation.) 

PREREQUISITE: Placement by WIDA SCREENER, WIDA ACCESS, or teacher recommendation 


EL INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT

Semester - Grades 9-12  

Adjusting to life at a new school can be challenging, especially for English learners. This course will provide students who are new the United States or new to Pattonville with an understanding of the skills required to be successful. The course is designed to provide students with support acclimating to the school environment, navigating technology used at school, and developing the social and instructional language needed to understand classroom interactions. Units will focus on study skills, technological literacy, utilizing school resources, and getting involved in the Pattonville community. This is a one semester course designed for students in the WIDA level 1-3 range that can be repeated for credit.. 

PREREQUISITE: EL Teacher and counselor approval required. 

EL GOVERNMENT

Full Year-Grade 12

This course is designed for students learning English and includes supports and resources for English learners. Government class studies the structure of the United States Government and the requirements and responsibilities of United States citizenship. Students will also study the politics and elections process of the government as well as study Missouri's state government. It fulfills the state requirements that students pass a course on the United States Government and also fulfills the requirement that students pass the United States and Missouri Constitution Tests and the United States Civics test requirement.

PREREQUISITE: EL teacher and counselor approval required.
