Indigenous Graduation Coach
I am Metis and from St. Albert, AB. My family is originally from Prince Albert and surrounding areas of Saskatchewan.
I have been working at MCHS for 11 years and have been a teacher for 15 years. This is my fifth year in this role working with the Indigenous students at MCHS and with community members from the Paul First Nation and the Parkland area.
I have taught English, Aboriginal Studies, CALM and PE. I am currently taking a Master's Degree at the University of Alberta in Educational Policy with a specialization in Indigenous People's
Education. My aim is to continue to support the students and communities I work with and to work to improve the system of education that serves Indigenous students.
At the school, here are some of the ways in which I support students:
academic support and tutoring with student course work always with the goal of fulfilling graduation requirements.
working with the junior high schools to transition to high school as well as through higher grades.
personal counselling and referrals to our school counsellors or outside school support working with families and community members as a liaison supporting and celebrating Indigenous culture and ways of knowing through classroom learning, curriculum support for teachers, school-wide events and community partnerships support with post-secondary applications and funding.
Plus, I always have snacks!
