Post-Secondary Partnerships
Memorial students in Grade 12 have the opportunity to start their post-secondary journey early this year. Agreements have been made with several post-secondary institutions to take courses at no cost or minimal cost to students and their families. Students can take a large variety of courses in almost any area of study. The Institutions that are currently available are Olds College, Northern Lakes College, Athabasca University, Portage College, and Lakeland College (also East Central Catholic in collaboration with Lakeland College). Other Institutions may come available later in the school year.
There are some pre-requisite requirements for these courses and it is important to set up a meeting with a counselor/grade coordinator to find out if a student is eligible. You can also set up a meeting with Mr. Partington, the division coordinator who is at Memorial on Tuesdays. If you are looking for an added challenge or just want to get a head start on your post-secondary learning, this might be the opportunity for you!
What are the benefits of Dual Credit courses?
Participating in a Dual Credit course allows students to earn credits in high school and post-secondary institutions at the same time, as well as earn credits that may lead to preferred placement and workplace certification.
Students gain confidence to succeed academically in a post-secondary environment.
Students use the latest education technologies which prepare them for the technological workforce.
Students learn what college and university instructors expect, while still in familiar high school surroundings.
The RAP (Registered Apprenticeship Program)
Memorial Composite High School wants to provide the best opportunities to students for their futures. The goal is to provide quality information to students, parents and employers when choosing the RAP Program. The partnership with Careers Next Generation will help the future students when participating in RAP. Mr. Partington will be working with the partners involved to provide information to the students and families. This is a first step towards a successful trades future.
The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is an Alberta Education program that allows high school students to begin their apprenticeship training while going to high school. The Registered Apprenticeship Program is a program for high school students in Grade 10, 11 or 12 throughout Alberta.
RAP students begin with a 125-hour internship with an employer in one of over 50 registered trades. If you decide to pursue your trade as a career (and your employer is happy with your work so far), you'll get registered as an apprentice and keep working with your employer. Once you're registered, all your working hours will go towards your first year apprenticeship required hours. You'll also earn up to 40 RAP high school credits for your work.
