How Do I Get Started With Zoom in My Classroom?

Quick Start for Teachers

Zoom for Education

The Zoom education account allows meetings beyond 40 minutes (until 6/30).

To register for a new account:

Go to https://zoom.us/signup
Signup with you psbma email. (Most use the sign in with Google option.)

IMPORTANT: When using video conference with students, teachers must use this PSBMA email associated Zoom account and send invites to participants.

Settings: https://zoom.us/ --> Log-in --> Settings

Go to Zoom.us to set your default meeting settings. Anytime you schedule and host a meeting your default settings will be applied.

Make sure that you have the latest Zoom Updates.

Meet Now vs Scheduled Meetings

There are 2 types of meetings, Meet Now (Instant Meetings) and Scheduled Meetings. Learn about how to use both types of meetings.

Scheduling meetings

Zoom offers multiple methods to schedule a meeting. A host has control over the options for their scheduled meetings except for settings that an administrator has locked for all users in the account or for all members of a specific group.

Host controls allow you as the host to control various aspects of a Zoom meeting, such as managing the participants.

Enable and Use a Co-Host

The co-host feature allows the host to share hosting privileges with another user, allowing the co-host to manage the administrative side of the meeting, such as managing participants or starting/stopping the recording. The host must assign a co-host.

As the host in a meeting, you can manage the participants. By default, any participant in a meeting can share their video, screen, and audio.

Disable join before host

Students cannot join class before the teacher joins and will see a pop-up that says, “The meeting is waiting for the host to join.“

You can mute all participants that are already in the meeting as well as new participants joining the meeting.

Lock Down The Chat

How to control chat access

You can control who participants are allowed to chat with. You can also disable the chat for all participants or disable private chat, so participants cannot send private messages.

Breakout rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting in up to 50 separate sessions. The meeting host can choose to split the participants of the meeting into these separate sessions automatically or manually, and can switch between sessions at any time.

The Waiting Room feature allows the host to control when a participant joins the meeting. As the meeting host, you can admit attendees one by one or hold all attendees in the waiting room and admit them all at once.

During a Meeting, if a student is being disruptive you can send them out of the class to the waiting room.
