On the Self-Assessment Survey: Integrity I scored, “You fully understand the issue of integrity.” I do understand integrity because in my upbringing my parents stressed honesty and being truthful and demanded that I act up upon that honesty to take a stand to make things right.
Integrity is the when one is fair and straight forward with their conduct and adhere to the facts. It begins with understanding what honesty means and acting with honesty. It then means becoming aware of what integrity means, identifying opportunities for integrity, and initiating situations where students can act with integrity.
Understanding What Honesty Means
Internalizing and Acting with Honesty
We need to start by understanding what honesty means by internalizing and acting with honesty. Try to model honesty by openly admitting to our mistakes in our own classroom. We discuss the honesty or lack of honesty of the fictional characters in our books and the real subjects of current events. In our morning meetings, students often role play situations where they were honest or not honest, take a look at how proud they would be of how they would have acted, and discuss the role that peer pressure plays in their fictional decision to act with honesty or not.
Aware of what integrity means, identify opportunities
Act with integrity
We teach our students about integrity so they become aware of what integrity means, identify opportunities to act with integrity, and act with integrity when they are in a situation that demands integrity. Try to recognize when students have acted with integrity and praise them for their actions. We look at fictional situations where students acted with integrity and discuss both the negative and positive consequences of those actions. We take part in discussions about how integrity can change over time and think about what precipitated and furthered those changes.
