As teachers, we need to clearly identify our objectives and goals for learning. We need to be clear on how that learning will scaffold towards the overall learning goals of the unit or course. We can use our clarity of purpose to develop activities that engage students in targeted tasks that build learning towards our overall goal. Our students will be more likely to engage in these activities because they will better understand the importance of their learning. We will Make the Learning Visible for our students so that they understand how their learning will build throughout the unit as they build knowledge towards specific outcomes.
Teachers will build in checks for understanding throughout the unit. Before instruction begins, teachers will check the students prior knowledge and understanding of the topic. During instruction, teachers will consistently check that students understand the concepts and are seeing how that understanding connects to larger objectives. After instruction, teachers will assess student understanding. At each step of the learning, teachers will use the gathered evidence to target their instruction to be responsive to their students' needs to scaffold work towards desired goals and outcomes or adjusting the goals to meet the needs of their students.
Teachers understand that clear feedback is needed to help students understand where their learning is at, develop a plan to help that student apply the feedback to achieve the desired goal, and frequently check in with that student to support their work towards their goals.
Teacher, peer, and self feedback that is Kind, Specific, and Helpful will be more successful at making the learning visible to each student and helping them see what they need to do next to continue learning towards a specific goal. The classroom culture of using revision, using feedback from the teacher, peers, and self, will help students find new ways of engaging with and deeply understanding the content.
