Designate a Facilitator (Host and Co-Host)
Set expectations and review etiquette
Call on students who have raised their actually or virtual hand.
Shared note-taking is great
Push your chair back to physically remove yourself from the discussion. this provides a clear signal that the floor is theirs.
Use non-verbal cue like nodding your head that you agree. This signals that you are listening, are encouraging them to continue, and are open to considering their thoughts.
The conversation should be directed from one student to another. not to you. Literally tell them to direct their comments to one another.
If the discussion is stalling -ask questions to get the class ask the class thinking about what has just been said.
Don't forget about small group discussions.
