Welcome to website for The Year of the Turtle at Driscoll
We will use this website to keep the Driscoll community updated on The Year of the Turtle, including our participation in Zoo New England’s HATCH program. Driscoll students and staff will be caring for two Blanding's turtle hatchlings in the library over the school year. These turtles will be released back into the wild in May. We are all so excited. What is The Year of the Turtle?
The Year of the Turtle began as a brainstorm about what brings kids and adults joy. Animals was at the top of the list. Working with Zoo New England to foster baby turtles seemed like a great start. Over the course of the school year students in Pre-K to 8th grade will be doing research on turtles and turtle conservation around the world. At the same time students will use these amazing reptiles as a source of inspiration for creating art in the art room. A huge thank you to the Brookline Education Foundation who funded a trip to Costa Rica to learn more about turtle conservation. Ms. Reid and Mrs. Reyelt went to the Osa Peninsula for 10 days to work side by side with scientists to learn about the indigenous sea turtles and the challenges they face for survival. They cannot wait to share their knowledge with their students this year through continued research in the library and art related projects in the art room.
