Black Lives Matter

As a community, P.S. 58 supports the Black Lives Matter Movement. We are committed to providing teachers, staff, families and students with the resources to understand the BLM Movement and the necessary steps in creating an anti-racist community.

Black Lives Matter At School encourages all educators, students, parents, unions, and community organizations to join our annual week of action during the first week of February each year.

There are curriculum materials for all age groups from Pre-K to college level, and during the week of action educators, students and families come together to draw attention to the Four Demands:

Black Lives Matter At School is a national coalition organizing for racial justice in education. Teachers at PS 58 participate in this week of Action in their classrooms and as a school community.

Many educators use the 13 Guiding Principles (left) of the Movement for Black Lives to teach about Black Lives Matter in their classrooms. A Kindergarten teacher in New York City, Laleña Garcia, put together child-friendly language to talk about the 13 Principles with young children. A High School Art teacher in New York City, Caryn Davidson, illustrated posters and a coloring book with activities for students to engage with the 13 Principles.

Click on the poster above to see all of the individual 13 Principles and the child friendly language to explain them to young children.

Ms. G reads Something Happened in our Town.mov

Listen to Ms. G read "Something Happened in Our Town: A Child's Story About Racial Injustice" by Ann Hazzard, Marianne Celano, and Marietta Collins.

This beautifully written story aims to answer children's questions about racist events, and to help children identify and counter racial injustice in their own lives.

Black Lives Matter at P.S. 58

Throughout the month of February, students learned more about and reflecting on the 13 Principles. We studied Black activists, heroes and icons, past and present, who brought and continue to bring change to the world.

As a culminating school wide project to Black Lives Matter Week of Action, students created various projects that embody the 13 Principles that we will display in a P.S. 58 Virtual Museum.
