Vowel Power

In this unit, students are introduced to VOWEL POWER! This power teaches them that there are vowels in every word, and we need these vowels to read and write words. This unit is composed of three parts:

    • Bend 1: Vowels in every word
    • Bend 2: Distinguishing short-vowel sounds
    • Bend 3: Wowels in bigger words.

How to support at home:

  • Play letter/sound games!
    • Play I spy with your child: “I’m spy something starts with the sound…"
    • Go on a letter hunt at home or when traveling throughout the city! Have your child draw a picture or make a list of all the things he/she can think of that start with a specific letter.
    • “Letter or Word Hunt” → When reading with your child, ask him/her to find all the words that start with the letter _____ on that page(in pictures and text). Also, have your child point to all the “snap words” he/she can find!
    • Label your apartment by encouraging your child to be a brave speller, recording letter sounds they hear.
    • Label important parts in the pictures of story books with the letters readers hear.
