On this link there are some suggestions we have written for your child to ensure they are effectively revising.
The school homework policy says students should be spending 1.5 hours for year 9, 2 hours for years 10 and 11 every week on science.
In science we would like your child to develop good revision techniques so the home work they are expected to do is partially lead by teaching staff and partially lead by you child.
The expectation is that they do the following during the allotted time, these are in order of priority.
Homework set by their classroom teacher.
Use Quizlet to practice recall questions on any topic they have completed (the link for your child to use is on their year group page).
Use Seneca learning to revise any previous learning (the link for your child to use is on the useful links page which they access from their year group page).
Exam style questions which they can mark themselves or ask their teacher to mark them, these can also be found on a link from their year group page.
Your children are being asked to answer recall questions at least twice a week in class, we are doing this because there is a lot of evidence to show that continuous low stakes quizzing will increase retention of information.
All the questions we are asking in class are on Quizlet and your child has access to them on the recall section of their year group page and should be using some of their homework time to practice these at home.
15% of exam marks based on required practicals
For Single Sciences:
Biology - 10 practicals
Chemistry - 8 practicals
Physics - 10 practicals
For each of the required practicals your child has access to the following on their year group page:
A recommended video for them to watch a teacher carrying out the practical;
Power point slides which link to a video about the practical and a few questions to aid understanding;
Past exam questions, split into different levels. There are some levels missing because they have not yet been examined.
Level 1: Foundation Paper only
Level 2: Common questions - Foundation and higher Papers
Level 3: Higher Paper only
There are exam questions for all the different topics on your child's year group page.
For most of the questions there are examiners reports, these are useful because they outline what the students who did the exam got wrong or misunderstood.
Please encourage your child to look at the report before marking the question, they can then see if they want to make any changes to their answer before looking at the mark scheme.
It is good practice to do a question and mark it before continuing on to the next one so they can correct any misconceptions and 'plug' any gaps in their knowledge before attempting, rather than repeating the same mistake over and over again.
During year 10 all parents are invited to core subjects supporting success evening, please find the presentation for science on this link.
