As you are aware students are required to remember a lot of information for their GCSE exams, this is especially true for science, where not only is there a lot of new content for students to remember, but there is also as much new vocabulary as you would need for a GCSE in French. This means KS3 is even more important than ever.
Here are some links to the research or summaries of the research being used to inform the strategies outlined above.
This link is by the learning scientists, who are a group of cognitive psychologists with expertise in the science of learning, they have written some blogs specifically for parents.
This link has research summaries, brief articles, and journal publications by cognitive scientists that describe current research on retrieval practice.
We have been implementing strategies based on cognitive load theory into the teaching of required practicals, here is a link to a one page summery of cognitive load theory. If you are interested in the whole report you can find it here.
On this link there are some suggestions we have written for your child to ensure they are effectively revising.
Your children are being asked to answer recall questions at least twice a week in class, we are doing this because there is a lot of evidence to show that continuous low stakes quizzing will increase retention of information.
All the questions we are asking in class are on Quizlet and your child has access to them on the recall section of their year group page and should be using some of their homework time to practice these at home.
