Frequently Asked Questions

There is no specific number of dancers who will be placed on Dance Company. Dancers whose score a 20+ will be considered for Dance Company. All three judges scores will be averaged to find this number. Remember, this program focuses on jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. Work on the technique, skills, and creativity in each of these styles.

The outside judges are well qualified dance professionals in the area. They are looking for proper technique in the various styles, correct alignment, passionate performances, and confidence. 

The judges are given a scale to assess you holistically based on your current level of dancing.

• Advanced Level (21-30)

• Intermediate Level (11-20)

• Beginning Level (0-10)

ADVANCED DANCER - Knows steps & various technique forms & are learning expression

• Clean triple or more pirouette turn

• Proper placement of shoulders and hips in kicks and leaps

• Able to execute multiple types of kicks and leaps

• A la seconde turns are controlled and executed with precision

• Shows a wide range of texture and emotion while dancing

• Able to pick up choreography quickly

• Confident in their dancing and performance

INTERMEDIATE DANCER - Knows steps & are learning technique

• Clean single or double pirouette turn

• Able to execute a few types of kicks and leaps cleanly and precisely

• Shows a range of texture and emotion while dancing

• Able to pick up choreography and execute choreography with hardly any mistakes

BEGINNING DANCER - Learning steps & learning technique

• Clean single pirouette

• Able to execute a front leap and traditional kicks

• Shows a passion for dancing and learning

• Able to execute choreography with a few mistakes

Your self-choreographed solo can be in whatever dance style you prefer. The judges are looking for your individual voice as a dancer. Be creative with your choreography and show them you can create and perform.

• DO NOT do choreography you learned from a teacher or choreographer

• DO NOT learn choreography from a YouTube or Tik Tok video

Please keep your solo between 45 seconds to 1 minute in length.

Provo Dance Company - Advanced level of technique in contemporary, jazz, and hip hop

• Turns - Dancers need to have solid balance while executing turns and control of their bodies when finishing the turns. They also need to be confident in executing turns on both the left and right sides.

      • Ability to maintain balance in trying new ways of turning

• Jumps & Leaps - Dancers need to have power and clean lines in all leaps and jumps they do. Turning leaps are in control with proper arm and leg placement. Dancers need to land leaps and jumps quietly and with control. They also need to be confident in executing leaps and jumps on both the left and right sides.

• Kicks - Dancers need to have control of limbs while executing extensions and kicks. Pointed feet, shoulder and arm placement, and engaged core are all requirements of kicks. Dancers also need to be confident in executing kicks on both the left and right sides.

• Retention - Dancers need to learn choreography quickly and retain it. Dancers already have excellent rehearsal strategies to help them memorize choreography. 

• Creativity - Dancers need to think outside of the box to develop new and innovative choreography.

Provo Dance Collective (Dance 3) - Intermediate level of technique in contemporary, jazz, and hip hop

• Turns - Dancers need to have good balance while executing turns and control of their bodies when finishing the turns. They also need to be confident in executing turns on both the left and right sides.

1. Decide which teachers you want to evaluate you. Be sure they are academic school teachers. Do not ask religious class or leaders, coaches, studio teachers, etc.

2. Find their emails at your school website under Faculty Directory

3. Compose an email to all 5 teachers, make sure you enter their emails correctly.

   1. EXAMPLE: Hi, I'm auditioning for Provo High Dance and am needing 5 teacher reviews. Will you please fill out this short form for me? It will ask about my behavior, attendance, and work ethic in your class. Please fill it out by April 13. Thank you! 

4. Make sure to copy and paste the URL to their form.

The average of your teacher's scores will become your overall "Teacher Review" score. You must have a 35/50 to be considered for a performing company.

This is the process of scoring each applicant.

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Is the application fully complete? (Headshot, grades, teacher reviews, URLS, personal info, etc.)

   1. Yes - Continue to next question

   2. No - Student did not follow directions entirely and will not be considered for company

2. Is the student eligible with grades and GPA? (No more than 1 "F" or "I"; 2.0 Cumulative GPA)

   1. Yes - Continue to next question

   2. No - Student will not be placed on a company due to ineligibility

3. Does the student have a "Teacher Review" score of 35 or higher?

   1. Yes - This student is eligible to be on company

   2. No - Student will not be placed on a company due to ineligibility

1. Is this student going to be a Freshman?

   1. Yes - Not eligible for Dance Company

   2. No - Eligible for Dance Company if meets other eligibility requirements

2. Has this student taken Dance 3?

   1. Yes - Eligible for Dance Company if meets other eligibility requirements

   2. No - Not eligible for Dance Company

DANCE SCORES:

The total dance score is out of 100 points. 30 points for each combo and 10 points for overall impression and performance.

• Advanced Level (61-90)

• Intermediate Level (31-60)

• Beginning Level (0-30)

Depending on your final score and where you are ranked along with the other applicants will determine the placement of the companies.

1. How do I upload my video to GooglePhotos and share the URL link?

   1. In your google menu, select GooglePhotos.

   2. Click on the "Upload" button in the top right corner.

   3. Select your video.

   4. Send the URL after the upload.

2. How do I upload my video to YouTube and share the URL link?

   1.  Go to create or upload a video. (top right corner of home screen)

   2. Select the file you want uploaded.

   3. In the "Viewing Tab" be sure to select "Unlisted". That way, only the people who have the URL can see your video.

   4. Submit the URL into the Text Option in Canvas for your assignment.

A list of student ID's will be posted to the school's website and the @provohighdance instagram account on May 10.

If you are invited into a company, you will fill out the "Acceptance Form" in order to claim your spot on the company. This form will need to be filled out by May 16.

If you are not invited onto a company, please consider taking Dance 2, Dance 1, or Dance in Pop Culture!
