This year we will be using the math program called Illustrative Mathematics: Open up Resources through McGraw-Hill Online Textbook. I used this program last year, with the Summit Learning Platform. The IM Program is a problem based curriculum, so the types of learning activities will be familiar. With a problem-based approach, students spend most of their time in math class doing mathematics themselves, rather than having me show them exactly how it's done. Through interactive activities students will spend their time making sense of problems, trying different approaches, selecting and using appropriate tools, evaluating the reasonableness of their answers, explaining their reasoning verbally and in writing, listening to the reasoning of others, and building their own understanding of the concepts. I am their to guide them through this process and tie all the pieces together so that they all walk away with a solid and deep understanding of the standards. "Mathematics is not a spectator sport" so be ready to DO math in our class!
