What is National Honor Society?

National Honor Society (NHS) membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

NHS chapters operate in all 50 states and many schools around the world, engaging and serving more than 1.4 million students. Each year, the average NHS chapter contributes:

Reflecting school leaders’ profound commitment to student leadership development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) founded NHS in 1921 based on the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

How do I become a member?

NHS selects those students to be members who have evidenced outstanding achievement in all four of the National Honor Society pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.  More specifically, students must complete and submit a completed student selection packet during an application window evidencing a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative, unweighted GPA; 30 hours of community service working with at least two separate organizations within the last two calendar years; and 12 months of leadership within the last two calendar years. For more detailed information on the selection criteria, please see our chapter's selection criteria document.  If students complete and submit on time a selection packet in the application window, each student's information will then be considered by our chapter's Faculty Council, who will make a selection decision.  Students may apply as Sophomores, Juniors, and/or Seniors; and may apply each year should they not initially be selected for membership.

Students transferring from another high school at which they were already inducted members of NHS may transfer their membership to the Walnut Grove Chapter.  Verification from the former school's NHS Sponsor is required to transfer membership.

The Walnut Grove Chapter of NHS has one application window per year in the fall semester.  This year's window has passed, (applications were due October 30th, 2023), but stay tuned for next year's application window. The application windows will be posted at the start of the school year on the website, in the parent newsletter, and will be announced in the overhead announcements. There will also be informational meetings twice per year during Grove Time to review the selection process and answer any questions.

What does being a member mean and entail?

Being a member of NHS is a true honor and is a recognition of a student's well-roundedness and outstanding accomplishments. Members will be a part of a service and leadership community once selected who work together to better the Walnut Grove community and the greater DFW community. Members will be be able to claim membership on future applications, will have the opportunity to apply for National Honor Society scholarships as a Senior, and will be recognized with regalia upon graduation.

Once selected, NHS members must maintain their embodiment and committment to the four pillars in order to maintain membership.  This includes maintaining a cumulative, unweighted GPA of a 3.5; completing 20 service hours per year; participating in whole chapter community service events; attending chapter meetings (held during Grove Time about twice per quarter); and maintaining academic and personal integrity. Students must be in good standing with the chapter to apply for NHS scholarships and earn regalia as a Senior.
