According to the French Philosopher Voltaire,“Goa is sadly famous for its inquisition, which is contrary to humanity as much as to commerce. The Portuguese monks deluded us into believing that the Indian populace was worshipping the Devil, while it is they who served him”. This quote states how Goa was known for its murder in the 1500's, as Portugese explorers killed thousands of Muslims and Hindus. This quote also explains how Indians were worshipping "the devil". This shows how Vasco Da Gama's expedition to India cruelly killed thousands of Hindus and Muslims.
According to Da Gama's Journal(translated), "On this voyage, da Gama attacked Arab shipping interests in the region and used force to reach an agreement with Calicut’s ruler. For these brutal demonstrations of power, da Gama was vilified throughout India and the region." This quote explains how Da Gama did not like India and Arab's trading agreement, and therefore forcefully made Calicut's ruler agree that Portugal would be the only country India traded with. The quote also shows how Vasco Da Gama was seen as a villain after this. This shows the political changes that occurred in India after Portugal created colonies there.
