The Portugese presence in India declined in the late 17th Century, as Vasco Da Gama died on December 24th, 1524 and they started facing competition from other European countries. The British started colonizing India in 1757 and they slowly started taking over. After gaining independence in 1947, the Indian government starting taking control over the remaining Portugese colonies in Goa, Daman, and Diu. Vasco da Gama's expedition to India set a huge impact on the country, as it caused forced religion conversions, exploitation of resources, and many political changes.
