Kindergarten through Grade 2: Students identified as gifted learners in the primary grades will receive enrichment programming in the general education classroom from their homeroom teachers. Extensions will include adjustments to the curriculum for students who have already mastered grade level material that enhance critical and creative thinking, and problem-solving strategies. All students in these grade levels will receive enrichment programming through our STEAM program.
During the months of April and May, all students in grade 2 and 5 are assessed using the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT3). It is a nonverbal assessment that measures the general ability for students in kindergarten through grade 12. This assessment is just one of the measures we use to determine eligibility. We also look at Link It assessments, iReady assessments, reading and phonics levels, and NJSLA scores for students in Grades 4-8. Student’s current teachers are also contacted for recommendations as well after completing the NNAT3 assessment.
All students who are eligible for the program are notified in September of the following school year. Any new students to the district must complete a full year in the district before being considered for eligibility unless previously identified. In this case, our G&T teacher will contact the previous school for reference.
Grades 3-8: Students in the upper elementary and the middle school grades will receive enrichment programming in a pull-out format from their general education classroom once in a 6-day rotation. Enrichment programming will include critical and creative thinking, logical reasoning, and problem solving strategies through project-based learning. Learners will have the opportunity to experience a myriad of non-graded learning environments, both traditional and virtual, that offer differentiated curriculum that incorporates advanced, in-depth, distinctive and complex content. Additionally, once a month all students in the program meet together for a day to work on larger projects across grade levels.
