Action Team Statewide Expansion

MISSION TO EXPAND

The Propel Action Team, in conjunction with APOST (Allegheny Partners for Out of School Time) and PSAYDN (Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network) have begun their statewide expansion of the Action Team model.

Their goal is to expand and create a youth leadership group across Pennsylvania in order to connect with other youth leaders, collaborate and learn from one another and design a scholar leadership group that encompasses youth voices of all different backgrounds.

Projects Across Pennsylvania

Service Learning Grant Lead- January-June 2021

The Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) has asked the Action Team to be the steering committee for a Statewide Service Learning Grant that runs from January-June 2021. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to: developing the competition, creating an application and promo video, publicizing the competition, accepting and reviewing service learning applications/videos, and, finally, sending award letters to the top 4 service learning projects.

The team also continues to meet with youth leaders across the state twice a month to expand the Pennsylvania Youth Coalition.

Action Team & Joint State Government Commission- January 7, 2021

The Propel Afterschool Action Team was invited to join the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network in a meeting with the Joint State Government Commission to discuss House Resolution 180 which deals with ideas for return on investment (ROI) for potential afterschool funding.

Lights on Afterschool- October 22, 2020

Our first group project was for Lights On Afterschool which is a national celebration for afterschool programs. Scholars across Propel and in other afterschool programs created audio with Saturday Light Brigade to share with Legislators at our Virtual Lights On Event. We also worked on a collaborative art project with Manchester Craftmens’ Guild. We will continue to meet and expand on youth leadership across the state.

PA Youth Town Hall with Lt. Gov. Fetterman- May 21, 2020

Congratulations to Jhordan Price and the Student Action Team for their stunning performance at the Virtual Town Hall where they joined afterschool students from across Pennsylvania in looking at issues of concern to students and families. Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman and First Lady Gisele Fetterman hosted the event. Jhordan was the emcee and represented Propel so very well. Coordinators Amil Cook and Kharma Lowe along with Assistant Director Deanna Dugan worked to prepare the students for their leadership roles in this town hall.

Talking points:

  • Impact of COVID-19 on you and your family.

  • What it means to be a young person during this time.

  • Impact on afterschool and school programs and career readiness.

Saturday Light Brigade Radio Productions, Inc. (SLB) also did interviews of Jhordan, Janara Price and David Owusu before and after the town hall and again on the Saturday morning radio program.
