Why do we focus on Freer Practices?

When asking for Students to produce there are, usually, 3 types of activities with different purposes. The 3rd one has a more clear relationship between performance and fluency so it is favorable during assessments.

Controlled

Check mostly for structure rather than usage.

The set of possible responses is either unique or very limited but always very predictable.

It involves very little creativity on the execution.

semi-controlled

Can be used to check structure but especially useful for usage.

The set of possible responses is limited but not entirely predictable.

It involves some creativity on the execution.

freer

Used mostly to check for retention of the TL (when it comes to awareness and usage).

It involves the most creativity in executing and demands not only recalling the structures studied but also knowing when and how to use it.

It's the layout the mostly resembles real-life situations so it's most used for checking performance (both at the end of classes and in assessments).
