"Creativity is just intelligence having fun."
Welcome to Film Production 10, I look forward to exploring the basics of Film Production with you!
This class should help to broaden your understanding of the art form and gain skills to become an effective visual storyteller.
Here you will find all the material we touch on in class for your reference through the year.
Class Rules
High School Film
All school rules are enforced in this class, including the uniform and personal device policies.
While editing, you may wear headphones, but they must not be connected to a personal device such as a phone or tablet.
Students who are out of uniform will be asked to leave class and may only return once they are in proper uniform or have approval from the principal.
Arrive on time and be ready to work. On filming days, recording must begin promptly. Classes are approximately one hour long, and time is needed to set up and put away equipment. Repeated lateness will result in a deduction of marks. Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late will be marked absent and will not be permitted to participate in class, which may also result in a deduction of marks.
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. All submitted work may be checked for AI-generated content and compared with the work of other members of the group.
I will choose the groups for all group work.
When shooting - be where you said you will be and behave appropriately. Do not interrupt other classes or other groups. Students that are disruptive may be taken out of the group and receive a 0 for that project.
While you are in this class, you are expected to work only on assignments for this course. This is not a study period for work from your other classes.
Meet all assignment deadlines. If an extension is granted, the assignment will be subject to a mark deduction.
Food and drinks are not allowed in class. Sealed water bottles are the only exception.
Students are responsible for getting equipment from my office and returning it at the end of class. Equipment must be signed out.
Groups must return from filming at least 15 minutes before the end of class. This allows enough time to transfer footage from the memory cards to your computers and return all equipment.
Every member of the group must transfer the footage from the memory cards to their own computer. It is not one person's responsibility to ensure everyone has the files they need.
All equipment must be handled with care. Any student who intentionally misuses or mistreats equipment will be removed from class and may receive a failing grade. Any accidental damage must be reported to me immediately.
Return dead batteries to me. Do not put them back in the case.
Your laptop is your responsibility. It must meet the minimum requirements to run DaVinci Resolve and be in good working order. If your computer does not meet these requirements, you may not take this class. A dead battery, forgotten charger, or malfunctioning laptop is not an acceptable reason for missing a deadline. Students without a functioning computer may be asked to leave class until the issue is resolved.
Windows
Operating System: Windows 10 Creators Update or Windows 11
RAM: 16 GB minimum (32 GB recommended when using Fusion)
Graphics: Integrated or dedicated GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM
Drivers: OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8 support with current NVIDIA Studio or AMD drivers
Mac
Operating System: macOS 15 Sequoia or later
Processor: Apple Silicon (M1 chip or newer; recent versions no longer support Intel Macs)
RAM: 8 GB minimum (16 GB recommended when using Fusion)
Graphics: Apple Silicon integrated GPU with Metal support
Some lesser systems will work, but these specs will provide the best performance. Nothing below an i5 or equivalent will work.
Most projects are assessed in three areas:
Planning
Shooting
Editing
The Planning mark may include storyboarding, scriptwriting, preparation, organization, and classroom behaviour.
The Shooting mark evaluates camera work, participation, and overall production quality. Every student is expected to participate by operating the camera and appearing on screen when appropriate.
The Editing mark is based on the quality of the final edit as well as your behaviour and productivity during editing sessions.
Projects that are not submitted will receive a mark of zero. Partial marks will not be awarded.
Most projects include both group and individual components. Planning may be completed individually or as a group, depending on the assignment. Filming is always completed as a group. Editing is always completed individually. Although you will work with a group during production, each student is responsible for creating and submitting their own edited version of the project.
I must see you work on editing. If some of the work is done at home, I must see the working file. Not providing this file can result in a mark of 0.
All projects must be appropriate for a school environment. Story ideas, music, dialogue, costumes, props, and any other content must receive my approval before filming begins.
In many cases, copyright must be adhered to.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all content requirements are met. Those requirements will be posted on Google Classroom. Missing requirements will result in a deduction of marks.
All work must be completed with school cameras and must be edited on DaVinci Resolve.
