  • Service opportunities will be posted on the NHS website and sent through Remind.

NJHS Service Requirements 10 total hours by March 1, of Sophomore year. Point break down is as follows:

NHS POINTS: Minimum of 5 service hours (Limit 6 hours per day)

These are points earned from a variety of persons, clubs, or organizations. These opportunities are sent to us (NHS sponsors) by these persons, clubs or organizations, and are requesting NHS student volunteers to help with their event or project. Since these are specific requests for our NHS students, these are emphasized more than other service hours. Opportunities change frequently, so check often.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE SERVICE POINTS: 5 total hours in any combination between the two categories. (Limit 6 hours per day)

Inside Service: 0-5 hours as long as inside hours plus outside hours is equal to 5 total hours.

These are points earned from anywhere the student chooses to volunteer that is part of Union Public Schools. This can include helping a teacher, volunteering at a school event, or any other school function within Union High School, or any other Union school.

Outside Service: 0-5 hours as long as inside hours plus outside hours is equal to 5 total hours.

These are points earned from anywhere the student chooses to volunteer in the community that is not part of Union Public Schools. This includes churches, libraries and a variety of other local community sources. These are always great ways for students to earn community service hours.

    • Any service to a sports team or club must be beyond the normal responsibilities required of team/club members. For example, sweeping the gym floor or storing band instruments would not qualify as service hours. However, visiting a hospital (outside the school day) or volunteering at a band competition would qualify as service hours. NHS advisors recommend students seek approval for service if there are any questions.

  • NHS volunteer hours may not be acquired during the school day.

  • NHS service hour forms must be submitted within two weeks (14 days) after the event and turned into the lockbox by the Activities Office.

  • Point forms are available in NHS sponsors’ rooms. Mr. Cousens: Room 3713, Mrs. Cobb: Room 2029, and Ms. Johnson: Room 1153, as well as in the Activities Office.
      • Bring a point form with you to your service event.

  • Please be advised that during the months of January through March, the number of available service opportunities posted on the NHS board is limited.
