Description
Logic is the art of thinking rightly. The study of logic trains and sharpens reason--something desperately needed in our world today.
This logic course will include both formal and informal logic. Here is an excerpt from the text we will be using for the formal logic portion: “THINK DANGEROUSLY. Logic isn’t just for experts - it should be your secret weapon. And it’s the kind of weapon that teaches you how to fight. It’s the bones that give your clenched fist its structure. In Introductory Logic, you will learn how to think well by developing these rock-solid fundamentals: How to form and interpret statements, the building blocks of logical thought; How to compose valid syllogisms, and expose the invalid fakes using counterexamples; How to analyze arguments in normal English; How to identify and deflect informal fallacies (one of the most instantly applicable parts of logic); And much more.”
We will use the informal logic text to guide us through the myriad of fallacies used every day in advertising, media, arguments, and reasoning. “This is a handy book for learning to spot common errors in reasoning.”
Assignments will be taken from the texts. Grading will be based on the results from the quizzes, tests, assignments, and project. And class time will be spent reviewing and reinforcing content, engaging in vibrant discussions, and applying our skills in constructing and testing syllogisms for validity and soundness. We'll also add some fun games in the mix, too!
This course is for any high school student who wants to learn to think logically and be able to discern errors in reasoning. The material can be appropriately assigned to the grade 9/10 level.
