GLO Academic courses are designed by specialty tutors who build upon and reinforce homeschool curriculum with weekly class times that offer in-person group learning opportunities. Although parents remain the primary educators of their student(s), GLO tutors design a common course schedule for the class to follow and provide the support and accountability needed to ensure students complete homeschool curriculum within a 15-week semester. They also offer marking and evaluation of coursework.
Each GLO course offers opportunities unavailable in the home setting, yet each may look different depending on the tutor, the subject being covered, and the students participating. Most courses involve weekly lectures prepared by the tutor. Yet all GLO classes include activities that require the full participation of students--whether that be in-depth discussions, individual presentations, team projects, and/or hands-on activities. As each student comes to class prepared and ready to give their best (regardless of who is marking their work--parent or tutor), everyone stands to benefit personally and academically by participating.
A course syllabus and all coursework for GLO classes are posted in a Google classroom. This allows students to see exactly what homeschool curriculum will be addressed and what activities or assignments will take place in the upcoming group classes. It also allows students to post questions and/or reply to their tutor and classmates and receive feedback from the tutor. Tutor-marked work is recorded here so that students may see their current grade at any point in the semester and print out grades for their individual assignments at the end of the semester.
GLO is not a school and does not issue credit for classes. However, tutors align GLO courses to OSSD standards by designing a course schedule made up of homeschool curriculum and in-class assignments that can equate to a full-credit (approx. 110 combined hours) or a half-credit (approx. 55 combined hours) class. At the end of a class, students are issued a GLO Course Completion Report or a GLO Grade Report depending on who is marking their work (tutor or parent) and the recommended credit value of the course.
Parents play a critical role in the success of GLO classes. It is the duty of the parent to closely examine the chosen homeschool curriculum and course requirements to ensure it will be a good fit for them and their student. Also, it is their duty to ensure their student prepares and participates fully in class assignments. As the “First Educator,” the GLO parent is first in line to address questions about course content and responsible for overseeing student progress and coursework completion. The tutor is available to offer support, answer in-class questions, and provide accountability, but the ultimate responsibility for the success (and grade) of the course resides with the parent.
When a tutor designs a GLO Academic course, he or she recommends a breakdown of how the overall grade of the course is to be calculated. This typically includes a combination of at-home assignments, in-class assignments, and class participation. Tutors create grading rubrics for in-class assignments and monitor class participation, but it is up to the parent to choose how their student is marked and which grade is ultimately assigned on the student’s homeschool transcript.
There are two marking options available:
In this option, at-home AND in-class assignments are closely evaluated and marked by the TUTOR. A final grade is calculated according to the recommended course grading structure and, upon course completion, tutors provide a grade report and written feedback that can be included in the student’s highschool portfolio. Parents may choose to include this grade on their student’s homeschool transcript or to assign a grade of their own.
Students follow the course schedule and come to class prepared to participate fully in discussions, activities, and assignments but are not given a grade by the tutor for their work. Instead, the PARENT marks the homeschool curriculum, reviews what the student prepares for classes, and uses any available rubrics and answers keys available to evaluate coursework. Occasionally, a tutor may offer feedback on a student presentation, however, with parent-marked courses in-class assignments are not given close evaluation by the tutor. Nevertheless, it is expected that Parent-Marked students will faithfully complete all assignments and participate fully in class activities.
Regardless of the marking option chosen, tutors provide written feedback on the student’s cumulative in-class work with a three-week progress report and a final course completion report or grade report.
GLO Academic courses are a huge help to parents and students. They offer support, accountability, and an enjoyable in-person learning experience to make completing a highschool course more rewarding for everyone. Whether you choose tutor marking or parent marking, we look forward to your participation!
