Sandy Evans:
I’m delighted to recognize tonight the members of the 2016 Glasgow Middle School team that won the Gold Award at the Family Career and Community Leaders of America competitions at BOTH the state and national levels.
The School Board extends our hearty congratulations to team members Lacy Callahan, Susan Connell and Zara Green, as well as to their Lead Advisor, Angela DeHart, who teaches Family and Consumer Science at Glasgow.
The team competed in the STAR Food and Innovation event. Participants were required to demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of food product development by creating an original prototype formula, testing the product through focus groups, and developing a marketing strategy. To make the challenge even more difficult, the teams were limited to using an ancient grain.
Teams had five minutes to set up a display, unassisted, and ten minutes to deliver an oral presentation introducing the audience to a new food, attractively packaged and displayed.
Lacy, Susan, and Zara demonstrated excellent planning and communications skills in working together. Their oral presentation which introduced the judges to Magic Toaster Pastries was informative, creative, and delivered with poise. Earning a Gold Award was a well-deserved honor.
I look forward to the day we will see Magic Toaster Pastries on our grocery store shelves -- and we’ll remember the evening when we met and congratulated the inventors.
A comment from Angela DeHart, FCCLA Lead:
In being recognized it is important to note that the 2015-2016 team’s ability to succeed was based and bolstered by the accomplishments of Glasgow’s previous STAR event participants. Their excellent work and ability to learn from failure enabled the 2015-2016 team to soar. The School Board’s recognition belongs to every STAR event member that paved the way for the 2015-2016 team’s accomplishments! Congratulations to all Glasgow STAR event participants with a special shout out to Brukutawit, Hermela, Nuran and Michaela.
