Over the last several years, using badges to recognize learning achievements and skill development has become a common practice. It has been my intention to acknowledge the students I work with for their skills they acquire as they work on different projects under my guidance.
Because badges are a visual representation of the skills or knowledge they have gained, students can build their own, unique, set of credentials when they earn badges. Students will then be able to communicate, online, the transferable skills they want to show others as they apply for scholarships, college, and, career positions. This page represents the badges that students can earn from me.
STEM club members were invited to participate in the club at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The 2016-2017 school year was the first time students could actively participate in STEM activities (i.e. NASA, Paradigm Challenge, Capital One coding, Open Campus, etc.). Students that completed at least 1 STEM Impressionists' activity earned this membership badge for their participation.
Learning how to acknowledge people, in a meaning way, is usually part of management's job. Student leaders in the STEM Impressionists are given tasks to practice their leadership skills. If the activity we are engaged in required acknowledging the participants in a 21st century way the students certified to create a badge are, after they finish the 5 lesson online class, issued this badge.
Students that participate in Glasgow's At the Table program receive this badge. The At the Table program allows students to use their cooking skills to cater different school events (i.e. National Engineering Week, Hour of Code, etc.). Not only do participating students get to practice their cooking skills, they also explore food-related career options with visiting guest speakers.
Students that want to participate in a science-fair type experience create a project for FCCLA's STAR event program. Students choose their area of interest, prepare their projects according to FCCLA event specifications and present their results at FCPS' District and FCCLA's state conference in Virginia Beach. If they qualify they go on to complete in FCCLA's National Conference.
In my first year as an First Lego League coach our team did such a fabulous job of researching and presenting their Trash Trek research project that they earned 1st place for Division 2.
