Davis: 40% of undergraduates participate in undergraduate research under the mentorship of professors. Neil Hunter, Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, has 53 undergraduate students included in his research group.
Irvine: The newly formed $100 million Institute and Museum for California Artcombines art from different genres including canvas, sculpture, paper and digital art forms with interdisciplinary research in areas from intellectual property to the nuclear and atomic elements of art materials. Merced: Professor Erik Menke and a team of Chemistry faculty will be using a new $1.5 million grant to explore innovative teaching methods in Chemistry and other introductory courses in STEM fields. Guided-inquiry labs that require students to think through and develop their own solutions to scientific principles, green chemistry, alumni mentoring, and the use of videos are all part of their plans.
Riverside: Bioarchaeologist Sara Becker will be using motion-capture technology in her research on labor practices of pre-Columbian societies. With the help of a grant from the National Geographic Society, Becker will use modern motion-capture technology to study the movements of artisans and other laborers to get a clearer picture of the physical mechanics behind tasks that have been practiced for thousands of years.
San Diego: Students who are blind or have low vision can now be connected to a professional human agent who will provide any visual assistance they need from face-recognition to wayfinding with one tap of a button. The Aira app, developed by a UCSD alumnus, is available with a subscription and is compatible with any camera-enabled iOS or Android device.
Santa Barbara: The newly created T.A. Barron Endowed Environmental Leadership Fund will support and advance environmental advocacy by undergraduate students in the humanities. Students will participate in classes and research from ethical, historical, cultural, literary, musical, dance, and film disciplines. 70 faculty already teach courses in environmental humanities in programs including Literature and the Environment, Environmental/Climate Justice, and Blue Horizons and GreenScreen media production.
