Current number plate designs and colours for heavy vehicles.
All states (excluding WA) are currently using the new National Heavy Vehicle Registration Scheme (NHVRS) number plates since July 2018 (VIC since October 2018 and NT since August 2019 on a voluntary basis). All NHVRS number plates have a reflective white aluminium base with embossed black characters with a blue sash with screenprinted white characters spelling out "National Heavy Vehicle".
Current Prefixes for NHVRS Number Plates (n = number, a = letter):
ACT, Vehicles: XA-nnaa, Trailers: YA-nnaa
NSW, Vehicles: XN-nnaa, Trailers: YN-nnaa
VIC, Vehicles: XV-nnaa, Trailers: YV-nnaa
TAS, Vehicles: XT-nnaa, Trailers: YT-nnaa
SA, Vehicles: XS-nnaa, Trailers: YS-nnaa
NT, Vehicles: XC-nnaa, Trailers: YC-nnaa
QLD, Vehicles: XQ-nnaa, Trailers: YQ-nnaa
WA has discontinued the Federal Interstate number plates and is issuing standard number plates to heavy vehicles.
I don't have concrete evidence that NT is issuing XC and YC but given they had CV, CX & CT for the Federal Interstate I would only think they would use XC and YC for NHVRS. C for Central Australia as N is New South Wales.
Here is some information I have found on the National Heavy Vehicle Register website.
National heavy vehicle plates will be issued in the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and, on a voluntary basis, in the Northern Territory whenever:
a new heavy vehicle is registered
an unregistered heavy vehicle is re-registered
a state or territory registration is transferred to a jurisdiction other than WA
a lost, damaged, destroyed or stolen number plate is replaced.
A nationally consistent plate fee of $25.45 per set of plates as at 2019 applies in these circumstances. The fee will be reviewed by the jurisdictions each year and may be increased in line with inflation.
In the Northern Territory, you can opt to be issued with a national heavy vehicle plate in conjunction with any transaction. National heavy vehicle plates will not be issued for vehicles registered in Western Australia and the plate fee for that jurisdiction will continue to apply.
