Writing Workshop (Bank of Dreams and Nightmares)
Year Four have been thinking big and creating world changing ideas as part of the #Roar2023 ideas competition in association with The Lion Club International.
Their work culminated in a presentation afternoon at the Dorchester Corn Exchange on Monday 3rd November 2023 to a panel of judges that included the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Alistair Chisholm.
Headteacher at The Prince of Wales School, Mr Gary Spracklen explains, “This is the third year in a row that we have worked in collaboration with our local Lions Club on the Roar ‘Ideas Competition’. Children have worked hard to develop their ideas in teams of 3 or 4, creating the concepts, posters, models, jingles and a sales pitch to share the advantages of their world changing big ideas! Entries this year have ranged from robots that collect waste from the sea to a device that helps elderly people feed their pets. We are very proud of all our pupils who have taken part”.
Speaking about the quality of the work on display, President of the Lions Club of Dorchester and District, Rory Major, said, “I am blown away with the standard of work seen from these Year Four children. Every child has spoken with confidence and conviction about their work and I have every assurance that our future is safe in their innovative hands”.
The ‘Winning Idea’ chosen by the panel of judges came from ‘Da Fishys’ (Year 4 pupils - Jessica, Jack, Lucia and Esme). Their idea was a backpack that helps stop people from drowning and provides a space to collect litter when swimming in the sea. Jack explains, “We have designed a product that can act as a life-saving aid while you are doing your bit to save the planet. We have worked really hard to develop and present our idea and we are very excited about representing our school in the next stage of the competition”.
The “Da Fishys” group will now create a video of their pitch, the model, posters and jingle. This video will be presented at the local finals coming up in a few weeks time.
In December, the Lions Club will organise a specialist panel of judges to select the ‘Overall Winning Idea’ in each of the local finals. These Winners will then be recognised and awarded at a National Final hosted in December.
