Impact
ENGLISH IMPACT -
At the Prince of Wales School, we measure the impact of our English curriculum through -
Reading - At The Prince of Wales School, learning to read is a journey for each individual learner. Our robust phonics scheme, RWInc, begins in Pre-School and children are introduced to sounds and a love of reading, quickly progressing at a stage not age approach following an in depth, half termly, assessment system. Children develop confidence and fluency and soon pick their own library books and find their passion for reading. Following the RWInc Phonics programme, children continue their journey with AR Reading and daily Guided Reading sessions where they continue to be exposed to challenging, high quality whole class texts, learning further skills required to develop comprehension. We celebrate that we are a reading rich school who also strives to invite authors and illustrators in regularly to inspire our readers, we run competitions, themed weeks and many dress - up days. We have a well stocked, regularly updated and current library, which the children visit weekly. All children leave the Prince of Wales School confident and fluent readers, often reading and comprehending above their chronological age. Above all, they leave in Year 4 with a love and passion for reading.
Writing - Cross curricular writing is firmly embedded across The Prince of Wales School. We strongly believe that writing should be relevant and have a purpose in order for our learners to use and apply their skills demonstrating a pride in their work. Clear learning objectives and success criteria enable all learners to understand expectations and take an active role in their learning by assessing themselves. Teachers carry out a "deep" mark on a once half termly extended piece of independent writing. Children then review their feedback immediately after and seek to make improvements which they then carry forward into their next piece of writing.
We set high expectations for all our learners and encourage them to challenge themselves using the differentiated success criteria. Pride in work and handwriting is also another core value here at the Prince of Wales School and children are highly supported, individually, through their journey of learning to write.
