Classrooms
The classrooms in Years 3 and 4 are designed to meet the needs of all children. Pupils may sit in groups to allow for both independent and collaborative learning or in rows to allow for independence and paired work. This may well change throughout the year as teachers will be flexible in their pupil groupings. Most lessons include some opportunity for paired work, group work or collaborative learning where appropriate.
Classrooms are bright, engaging and informative. Displays are stimulating and they are changed regularly to highlight current learning. Displays re-enforce key concepts being taught and celebrate children's learning across the whole curriculum. Resources are available in the classroom for children to access in order to support learning, such as phonic sound mats, spelling grids, thesaurus, place value mats, base ten etc. All resources are easily accessible, labelled and well-organised.
The Curriculum
In Years 3 and 4 we continue to offer a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum across all subject areas. We focus on developing independence, resilience and perseverance so children can achieve their full potential and we reinforce these skills with pupils through our 'Learning Legend' initiative.
In Reading children develop their comprehension skills to allow them to develop a full understanding of a wider range of text types. Children learn how to retrieve, infer, comment upon the author's word choice, predict and summarise in their regular Reading sessions. We continue to foster a love of reading by providing high quality engaging texts both across the curriculum and in reading for pleasure sessions.
Pupils access class readers in school and each half term they take home a' Read Aloud at Home' text to share with adults.
In Maths children in LKS2 build upon the firm foundations already made in KS1 and they develop their knowledge of written calculation strategies. They continue to learn times tables up to the 12 times tables through short, regular sessions that focus on multiplication and related division facts.
Maths lessons provide children with opportunities to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills across a wide range of concepts such as : number and place value, shape, measure and data. Pupils will be supported to develop their problem solving skills whilst searching for patterns and relationships and when solving open investigations.
In addition to their Maths lessons, children will complete 3 short revisit sessions each week, designed to readdress areas of the curriculum previously taught.
Pupils in Years 3 and 4 take part in weekly Enrichment sessions which build on skills and knowledge from previous years. For example pupils will have opportunities to develop their sketching/sculpture techniques during Art Enrichment, learn to play and perform the glockenspiels in Music sessions and prepare , make and taste different foods during food technology. Pupils use their digital literacy skills to create PowerPoint presentations about the local area. In drama sessions children build on their speaking and listening skills, increase their confidence and work collaboratively.
Trips and Visits
To support the children's learning in Years 3 and 4, they have the opportunity to take part in a range of trips and visits that are aimed to spark children's curiosity about the topics they are studying. For example, children in Year 3 visit the Leeds Museum to take part in a Mummifying workshop when learning about Ancient Egypt. Children in Year 4 have the opportunity to visit the Leeds Industrial Museum as well as the Royal Armouries as part of their history learning. In Year 4, all children attend swimming sessions weekly at Pudsey Leisure Centre until they can swim a minimum of 25 metres.
In addition to the trips that support learning across the wider curriculum, we also aim to develop well rounded individuals by giving children a wide range of experiences as part of the 'Owlcotes Elements'. These trips, visits and activities aim to enrich the curriculm with experiences that may otherwise not be accessible to our children. As part of the children's entitlement to the Owlcotes Elements in Lower Key Stage 2, children will visit the Depot climbing centre; take part in the Pudsey Carnival, Visit the West Leeds Activity Centre; experience live music and even attend a live sporting event!
