Knowledge Organisers should be used to support your child throughout the topic being covered.

They provide dates, key vocabulary, key facts and important information that will be covered.

Children will use these both in school and at home to supplement their learning, allowing us to work collaboratively together.

They can be used as a point of reference for year group knowledge and expectations within the given topic area.

Making Microorganisms

Children learnt about the different types of bacteria: algae, protozoa and fungi as well as looking at viruses. To show their understanding the children used playdoh to create replicas of them.

Raising Aspirations Week

This week the children have been visited by a range of people, from within our local community, who shared with the children their job roles, the journey they took to reach their job and the skills required to carry out their role. Some of the speakers provided the children with some practical elements as well as providing the children with opportunities to ask questions.

Laura Hatton- Haematology Nurse

Children enjoyed learning about Laura's role as an adult haematology nurse and looking at some of the equipment she would use. Laura explained to the children how you train to be a nurse and then often become a specialist in an area.

Leeds Train Station Safety Week Trip

As part of Leeds Train Station Safety Week, Y6 travelled to Leeds by train and then took part in 5 different workshops with Northern, Network Rail, LNER and Cross Country who covered different aspects of safety in and around stations and trains. The children also had the opportunity to have a go in a train driver simulation as well as looking at a police van with British Transport Police.

Openreach

Children had the fantastic opportunity to look at the work Openreach does. They demonstrated how to send cables through ducts using cameras to identify any blockages, looked at the wires and cables in more detail; the children had a go at stripping wires as well as controlling the hoist.

ASDA House

The children enjoyed learning about the wide variety of jobs, skills required for these, the different pathways which result in working at ASDA and then playing charades to recap what they had learnt.

Dance Teacher

Jenny spoke to the children about how she fell in love with dance at a young age but then due to an injury didn't think she would be able to pursue it. She explained how she continued to build her experience of dance through other means such as work experience in a dance shop and supporting local dance clubs. She studied dance in addition to her A-levels to ensure she had a back up plan and because she enjoyed learning. Now that she has her own dance academy, her learning journey continues to complete new courses and teach a wide range of children of all abilities to dance.

Psychologist

Emira explained in detail the skills and qualities which are needed to fulfill her role and how everyday is very different depending on the role she has. Some days she works within a hospital environment and other days she works within the community.

Lead Systems and Infrastructure Engineer and Head of IT

Nathan and Rob spoke about their roles and responsibilities within an IT department. They explained how they complete very varied and complex tasks not only in this country but they also travel across the world to work in overseas offices.

Youth and Social Worker

Carrie spoke about how her two different job roles have many similarities and therefore many transferable skills. Communication skills are vital for her roles to ensure the needs of the people she works with are met.

Tree Surgeon

Mark spoke to the children about the different equipment he uses to carry out his role as well as explaining to the children how he resulted in owning his own company through determination, resilience and consistency with his work to ensure customers are satisfied.

Health Visitor

Leanne who is a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. We learnt about how she looked after pregnant women and young children under the age of 5. Leanne talked about how she works in all kinds of places including visiting families in their homes. She needed a lot of skills in her job, especially kindness, rganisation and listening.

NHS Cardiology Team

Our Y5&6 children heard from a panel of NHS staff from the LGI Cardiology department this morning. Each person shared their role, what it involves and why they enjoy it. The main message was that they are a team and no one person can do their role without the others. Thank you to Damien (ward domestic), Grace (nurse), Prianka (general manager) and Andy (consultant cardiologist).

Mechanical Engineer

The children enjoyed learning about what a Mechanical Engineers job entails and were intrigued to hear about the different methods of transport that he had worked with - especially the planes.

Ambulance service

Our final visitors for Raising Aspirations week were paramedics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Y6 learnt that paramedics need to be calm under pressur, have excellent communication skills, empathetic, adaptable and be able to work in a team. They learnt how a difibrillator works and how to do CPR on dummies.

Junior Warrior

Despite the heat, the children took on the challenge of completing the 3k extravaganza attempting 15 obstacles, from spider webs to mud hills and even crossing the bog of doom. All of the children demonstrated excellent resilience and teamwork during this which was wonderful to see.

Yorkshire Water Efficiency Workshop

The session included the children gaining a better understanding of why water is so essential for life, recapped some facts about water (previously learnt in Geography) and watching a video of how the water is processed at the treatment centres before being pumped to our house to be used. Children were amazed to learn the amount of water some basic daily tasks use during some interactive activities.

Rivers Trip

After finishing our learning all about rivers, we went to visit the river Wharfe in three different locations (Heber's Ghyll, Otley and Bolton Abbey).

During the day children carried out field work by measuring the flow, width and depth of the river at the three locations.

City Centre Cycle

We are incredibly proud of our Y6 pupils who braved the heat yesterday and cycled along the canal into Leeds City Centre and back again. They were positive, resilient and great ambassadors for Primrose Hill.
