"Mrs. Espy, why do we have to learn this? Will we ever use this again?"
These two questions are heard at least once a week in each of my classes (and in classrooms all across the United States). Students want to know WHY they are learning what they are learning. And while I don't usually play into this line of questioning, there is some validity to it. Why is learning mathematical concepts so important? The following articles might help to explain the real-world connotations for studying math - why it matters, and why your child should do it.

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM)* is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation.

Prodigy Math is an online source for math learning and remediation. Your child will be using this program some in class this year. They will be added to a class and will be able to use in school and at home.

PhET Simulations are FREE interactive math and science simulations. They are based on extensive education research and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery.
Virtual Nerd has several tutoring videos that can help with the new and more difficult concepts that we learn in middle school. Simply choose the topic you need help with and all videos made on that topic will be listed underneath!
Math-Drills.com has a TON of worksheet resources! I often use these in class to help with remediation, guided and/or independent practice, and review for quizzes and assessments. If you find your child is having a difficult time with the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) - this site is a good place to start to download/print off practice sheets.
Math Planet is an online resource where one can study math for free. Take our high school math courses in Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry. We have also prepared practice tests for the SAT and ACT.
