Art & Design Education Department of Pratt Institute
In the following work from Thesis 1 & 2, teacher candidates research, plan, teach, reflect upon, and revise a thematic unit plan (12-15 lessons). Both courses help candidates become more reflective practitioners who are able to plan, teach and reflect upone curricula that leads to high-quality student work. In the first course candiates reflect upon their curriculum planning process and content and in the second course they reflect upon their curriculum in action after they teach a short learning segment in an after-school program.
Candidates conduct school-based research to understand the learners in the after-school program and their cultural, linguistic, and social contexts and stage of development. They then plan lessons that involve ideation, skill-building and immersion in contemporary art, teach them, and revise their curriculum based upon an analysis of their teaching. Throughout thesis, candidates' artistic practice informs their unit plan design.
