Zones of Regulation, is a great visual tool for students at all levels of understanding and verbalizing their emotions.
Teaching students to recognize what Zone they are in, can then help them recognize what action to do to get back to the Green Zone. Once in the Green Zone, they are in the best mindset to learn and focus.
It is important to also teach students that we all experience each Zone at different points and there is nothing wrong with going to the Yellow or Red Zones. So long as we recognize it and do something to move back into the Green Zone.
You can use the below tools, to help teach ways to stay and move back into the Green Zone.
When we experience a problem, our reaction to that problem is really what effects our emotions.
We need to help students learn how big their problem really is, by the degree in which they need help. Also support them in recognizing if their reaction to the problem matched the size.
When children learn how to pay attention, how to pause, understand the value of kindness and generosity, more deeply understand their emotions, we can help raise children to be kind, sensitive, and understanding adults. Everything we need to teach as school counselors can be taught through the lens of teaching the skills of paying mindful attention.
