We strongly believe that every student should feel free to express themselves and be who they feel they are without judgement from anyone. Everyone has the right to explore how they want to express their identity in a safe and supportive environment. At Vernon, your Counselors are here to support you and provide that safe and supportive environment. We are advisors to 2 GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance) groups at Vernon and are committed to working with students, to provide a safe and supportive school environment.
Vernon has two GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance) groups.
3 Wings of Freedom: advised by Ms. Hanna, meets on Wednesdays at 10:37am
4-5 Wings of Freedom: advised by Dr. Breaker, meets on Tuesdays at 11:50. Grades 4-5 alternate weeks.
6-8 Wings of Freedom: advised by Ms. Lyndsey, meets on Wednesdays at 12:25pm
The goal of Wings of Freedom, is to provide a safe and supportive space for students to discuss topics such as gender identity and expression and sexual orientation. All students interested in working to great a safe and supportive environment at Vernon, for students and teachers around gender identity and sexuality are welcome to attend these group.

LGBTQ Definitions: Whether you need clarification on what “transgender” means or you need an age-appropriate explanation of what “gay” means, we’ve got you covered.
Responding to Students Questions About LGBTQ Issues: Students ask a lot of questions, and some are difficult to answer quickly and succinctly. Practicing responses will help to ensure that you are prepared to get your students the answers they need.
Trans-Parenting: is an organization dedicated to providing support and educational resources to parents and their advocates (pediatricians, mental health professionals, lawyers, schools, friends, family, and churches).
SMYRC: Students can follow SMYRC on social media since services and hours of operation are changing quickly as things unfold. More information at smyrc.org, facebook.com/smyrcpdx, and Instagram @smyrcpdx. SMYRC is currently offering free food crates for pick up, and virtual support check-ins with SMYRC staff.
