This introductory course exposes students to both wheel throwing and handing techniques (slab, slab cylinder, pinch, coil and drape construction). Students will also be familiarized with both safety and studio best practices in the ceramics lab. Students will learn to throw basic forms such as bowls and cylinders. Students will also make hand built pieces including mugs, geometric and organic forms, and other functional and non-functional pieces. Students will learn how to apply under glazes and over glazes and learn about other decorative kiln firing techniques.

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1-2 . Grades 10-12
This course emphasizes skills already learned in Ceramics 1-2. Students will further investigate more complex firing and glazing techniques such as under glazes, stains and oxide application. Ceramics 3-4 is designed for students who have already completed Ceramics I-2 and want to perfect and refine their ability, craft and design. New wheel and hand building techniques will be introduced and applied in more complex ways than in Ceramics 1-2. Students will also develop a body of work to be used in a portfolio or showcased in school or community exhibition.

Prerequisite: Ceramics 3-4. Grades 11-12
This course is for students who have already studied ceramics and want to enhance their skills in both wheel throwing, hand building and glazing. This class is for a serious potter who wants to pursue a career in ceramic production or wants to study the ceramic arts in college. Students will learn and incorporate advanced techniques in clay surface design and glazing in body of work. Finished projects will be archived in a digital portfolio to potentially used for college admission.

Course Equivalent- A one-semester, introductory college course in 3-D art.
Prerequisite: Ceramics 3-4 or Ceramics 5-6 Grades 11-12
AP 3-D design is the last course in a sequence of beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes. This class will focus on the individual development of a 15 piece portfolio of original 3-D ceramic artwork. Each piece will be photographed and compiled to be reviewed by the AP College Board to determine if the series meets eligibility requirements for college credit.
