What is Community Meeting?
Community Meetings take place at the start of each school day. We discuss the Word of the Day and the schedule, check-in with one another and engage in activity from our SEL curriculum, Wayfinder. We often use this time to compliment and congratulate each other, to share problems or issues and discuss resolutions, and to reconnect through humor and play.
What are CAS Clubs?
CAS stands for Creativity, Activity and Service, and will take place throughout the school most Thursdays from 9:15am-10:00am. CAS Clubs are an opportunity for students to work with a variety of staff and students and explore different interests each quarter. It’s a fun and equitable way for students to access extracurricular activities and the staff is excited to offer a variety of clubs and activities throughout the year.
What is Nerd Work?
Nerd Work occurs roughly once a week, typically during our “Science, Health, or Social Studies” block in the afternoon. Nerd Work is an opportunity for students to explore their own interests, pursue a personal project, conduct research and share their learning. It is often a favorite part of the school week. Students will choose a topic or driving question to investigate, and will investigate it for at least one month. By the end of their investigation, they will create an ‘artifact’ to share with the class that illustrates what they have learned through their research, reading and writing regarding that topic.
I will lead students through the first few Nerd Work topics, and then they are able to choose how they spend this time and what they study. While I do have veto power in terms of topics, I expect students to take this opportunity for autonomy seriously and to investigate worthwhile topics that interest them personally and further their academic knowledge. I believe this kind of work encourages creativity, self-teaching practices and lifelong learning skills.
In my experience, students use this time to independently study aspects of fields such as: zoology, architecture, engineering, astronomy, history, linguistics, geology, robotics, genetics, geography and much, much more!
