Welcome to our class website! Here you'll find information about our curriculum and schedule, as well as helpful links. The Friday Update is here.
Literacy: This will be our fourth year using a curriculum called Wit & Wisdom. In Literacy Workshops we read books, ask questions, hold critical discussions, study grammar and vocabulary, and write about our reading. The texts lead naturally to social studies and science lessons and literacy work is regularly integrated into other parts of our day. This curriculum is focused on shared texts, building background knowledge, acquiring vocabulary and developing writing skills.
We also find time to independently read and write, to practice new skills and strategies in new contexts, and to reflect on our work and conference with peers and adults.
Math: We are in year five with the iReady curriculum. I work to combine whole group, small group, and independent math activities in a way that allows different types of learners to invent and understand math concepts through exploration and discussion, as well as repeated practice. Whole group lessons are a venue for the introduction of math concepts, and an opportunity for students to be flexible math thinkers and to communicate their thoughts and strategies. Daily word problems ask students to demonstrate their work using visuals and mathematics, as well as explain their thinking to a partner, the group, and in writing using concept specific vocabulary. Students practice skills with partners and in small groups, and do independent work on paper and online.
Science, Social Studies & Health: This year, our science curriculum is Amplify. This is our third year using this curriculum.
Social Studies and Health curriculum are district-created and you can learn more about those programs on the sites linked.
We'll also be using an SEL (Social Emotional Learning) curriculum during our Community Meetings called Wayfinder.
