Dear FHS Lightning Band Families,
What an incredible year of music making we have been having! It’s an honor and a privilege to work with all of these Franklin musicians and to have such a strong community that supports music education.
This weekend 49 of our musicians performed at the State Band Championships- Oregon State University Lasells Stewart Center. Franklin performed beautifully for family and friends and three collegiate adjudicators from Colorado State, Puget Sound, and The College of the Pacifics. The top twenty 6A Bands in Oregon performed at the OSAA competition. In addition to 18 minutes of continuous music, all groups were required to sight read. Out of the twenty bands, we placed 15th overall with a 5 point deduction for exceeding the 30 min maximum of alloted time on stage. Don't get me started...timing has been an issue all festival season.
I have attached the results from the large ensemble state competition here. Our combined score is easy to find because of the 5 point deduction. If you would like to listen to our performance, I have linked it here.
Congratulations Lightning Bands! We have had soloists, chamber ensembles, and the large ensemble perform at state this year. That is a huge accomplishment. I’m looking forward to continuing this legacy of musical excellence with you.
In other news, The End of the Year Awards Concert is coming up on May 27th (presale tickets here) Franklin Graduation is on June 2nd, and the Grand Floral Parade is on June 6th. Here is a flyer with all of the end of the year activities in the band department.
Our Lightning Band Booster parent volunteers have been fitting the students in their marching uniforms and the students look great! We will have a few marching rehearsals the week of June. Check out the FHS Band Calendar for rehearsal times. This year we will be the only PPS Band in the parade. I have been open and honest with the students also, marching is hard work and challenging so get ready to sweat! Thank you to our senior musicians who are coming back after graduation to represent their school one last time! My seniors are amazing. 22 seniors!
We are also having a parent meeting on Thursday, May 28th regarding next years’ trip to Canada in May of 2027 at 6 pm in the band room.
Keep your music skills Developing over the summer. Check out all the summer band camp opportunities! You can also start working on your WIBC and All-State Auditions over the summer!
See you all soon,
Jason Owens
