Welcome!!!

Welcome to Beverly Cleary School and the Beverly Cleary Counseling Center! Overall our role is to provide all students equitable access to a quality developmentally appropriate and comprehensive counseling program focused on academic success, personal and social development, and career and college counseling. Counselors, in partnership with teachers, students, parents, community members, and administrators, will ensure that each and every student becomes a life-long learner and a respectful citizen of a diverse, multicultural, and international community. The school counseling program at Beverly Cleary is based on the American School Counseling Association National Model (ASCA) and Portland Public Schools Counseling Framework.

These services are provided through four program components of classroom counseling curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and support services. Delivery of these services may be provided through the following components:
Classroom Counseling Lessons will be scheduled synchronously in your students’ class Kinder through 5th in partnership with the classroom teachers. Middle school students will receive lessons in health or science class. The curriculum can include a variety of lessons that address respect, responsibility, community-building, processing feelings, problem-solving, friendship, getting along with others, and personal safety and health. All lessons will address with inclusive language living in a multicultural and diverse world.
Small Counseling Groups will be offered depending on the needs of our students. We may offer groups on a variety of topics included but not limited to: social skills, friendship, study skills, anger, grief, divorce, mindfulness, anxiety, and impulse control. Referral to small groups can be made from any staff, parent, or student. All students participating will have to have adult permission. Groups will run for 6-8 weeks, once a week. More information about groups can be found in future "Counselor Corner" newsletters.
Individual Counseling in our school is solution-focused, meaning short-term. A student would be seen no more than a few times depending on the need and circumstances. If the student is in need of additional mental health services, we can help in the referral process. Students can fill out a counselor form (normally found in the Main Office or Counseling Offices). Virtual forms available. Parents and/or students can contact counselors through email or google hangout/chat.
Transition Assistance will be for all new students. We will meet with new students during new student celebrations to give them additional information about Beverly Cleary, a chance to ask questions and connect to other new students.  Transition is also addressed in classroom lessons for all grades moving campuses, elementary to middle school, along with 8th grade to high school.
Teacher Consultation and collaboration is available and ongoing throughout the year.
Parent Consultation is also available by appointment. Please feel free to set up an appointment by email. We will try to return emails within 24-48 hours. We can meet virtually or by phone.
