Born in a small fishing village at the southern tip of Madagascar, I carry a global perspective shaped by life across continents and throughout the U.S.—from Indiana to Connecticut, Texas to Washington. My parents’ courageous decision to immigrate to America for educational opportunity continues to inspire my commitment to equity, learning, and community.
With over 25 years in education. I’m passionate about creating safe, inclusive spaces where students and staff can thrive. I went to Gonzaga University, the University of Washington, and City University of Seattle, and recently earned a micro-credential in Child Behavioral Health from the University of Oregon. You could say that I am a life long learner.
I’m a proud mom to LeeAnn and Malcolm, and a Nani to Sophia and Malik—two wonderfully busy humans who keep me laughing and grounded. Outside of school, I continue to volunteer with Minds Matter, helping high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds turn their college dreams into reality. When I’m not supporting young scholars, you’ll likely find me hiking forest trails, exploring new corners of the world, or curled up with a good book. But my happiest place? Feet buried in warm beach sand, waves whispering nearby, and the sun reminding me to breathe deeply and savor the moment.
Counseling is truly the best job I’ve ever had, and I’m honored to walk alongside young people as they grow.
Hi! My name is Kandice Abney and I am so excited to be a part of the Jackson Middle School community! I was born and raised in Pendleton, Oregon, but I have lived in all four corners of the state over the years. I started my college path off at Blue Mountain Community College, and from there I moved onto Southern Oregon University in Ashland to complete my Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice. I then relocated to Portland, which quickly became my home, and eventually made it to Lewis & Clark College where I earned my Masters in Education for School Counseling. In my free time I like to roller skate, read and/or listen to books, cook, and spend time with my friends and family.
