Onomatopoeias
Definition: Words used to describe a sound. (This makes writing more fun. Instead of writing “There was a loud noise that sounded like a firework,” writing “Boom!” can make it more exciting and concise!)
Examples:
“Crash!”
This can describe two or more things colliding together in more of a dramatic way, rather than saying something like, “The two cars crashed into each other.”
“Zap!”
This can describe something that is getting shocked in more of a dramatic way. For example, saying, “I grabbed the broken cable and...zap! It lightly electrocuted me!” is more interesting than saying something like, “The broken cable electrocuted me.”
“The horse neighed!”
This example is a little different since it’s part of an actual sentence.
However, “neighed” is still an example of an onomatopoeia because it is a word used to describe the sound a horse makes.
Saying “The horse neighed” is more fun and concise than saying, “The horse made the sound that horses make.”
"He sneezed."
This is NOT an example of an onomatopoeia because when we sneeze, that isn't the sound that a typical sneeze makes.
However, "Achoo!" would be an example of an onomatopoeia for a sneeze because that's the sound we usually make when we sneeze!
Self-Reflection
What makes an onomatopoeia? Can you think of your own examples?
What do you think you’re a rockstar at?
What still confuses you?
Please check in with your partner(s) and/or teacher before moving on!
Good work :)
